NRND means "not recommended for new designs". The part is still in production and you can still buy it, but the manufacturer is telling you not to design it into anything new. It is the earliest formal warning in a component's decline, and it usually arrives long before any end of life notice, last time buy date or price spike. Nothing about your current production run breaks the day a part goes NRND. What changes is the clock you are now on.
This guide covers what the status actually signals, why it means different things at different manufacturers, what typically follows it, and the four options open to a European OEM or EMS buyer whose BOM just picked one up.
What NRND does and does not mean
Texas Instruments defines the stage plainly: the product "is available for existing designs. However, for new designs, we recommend considering an alternate." That is the whole of it. An NRND part is orderable through authorized channels, carries the same warranty and quality commitments as an active part, and can be bought for existing builds and service stock.
Three things NRND does not mean, and all three are commonly assumed:
- It is not an end of life notice. No last time buy date exists until the manufacturer issues a formal product discontinuance notice. NRND on its own sets no deadline.
- It is not a quality failure. The part still meets its datasheet. In most cases the flag reflects a business decision about where the manufacturer wants new sockets to go.
- It is not a countdown of known length. Some parts sit NRND for a year and then get a discontinuance notice. Others sit NRND for a decade and keep shipping.
Why the same three letters mean different things
This is the part the glossary pages leave out, and it is the part that decides how worried you should be.
TI applies NRND when there is a potential issue that may affect product quality or manufacturability. NXP applies it while explicitly stating that no discontinuance decision has been made. Same status code, materially different signal. A part flagged by one manufacturer may be weeks from a discontinuance notice; the same flag at another may simply mean the fab wants new business on a newer process node.
Manufacturers also do not agree on the vocabulary itself:

The practical consequence: a BOM health tool that maps every vendor's status into one column labelled "NRND" is flattening real differences. Before you act, read the manufacturer's own lifecycle policy page for that specific vendor, and check whether a product change notification has been published against the part. The clock that starts after NRND
NRND itself carries no committed timeline. The committed timeline starts at the discontinuance notice, and it is governed by JEDEC J-STD-048 (JESD48), which sets 6 months from the notice for last time buy orders and 12 months from the notice for last time ship.
Most large manufacturers publish something more generous on top of that minimum. Renesas, for example, moves a part to EOL-notified roughly 12 to 24 months before discontinuation, accepts last time buy orders for 6 to 12 months from the notification date, and continues production for a further 6 to 12 months after the final order date. Read end to end, that is a window of well over a year in which to act, provided you see the notice.
The failure mode is not the length of the window. It is missing the notice entirely, discovering the part is gone at the next build, and then paying broker prices for whatever remains in the channel.
Four options once a part goes NRND
1. Do nothing and keep buying. Legitimate when the product is late in its own life, annual usage is small, and the part is a commodity with real second sources. Cost today is zero. The risk is that you inherit the problem at the worst moment, when the discontinuance notice lands and you have neither a qualified alternate nor budget for a bridge buy.
2. Bridge buy now, at authorized prices. Buying 12 to 24 months of coverage while the part is still an ordinary catalogue line is far cheaper than buying it in a last time buy scramble, and much cheaper than buying it after obsolescence. The cost is working capital and shelf life. Moisture sensitive devices and parts with limited solderability windows do not store indefinitely, so check date codes and storage requirements before committing to a large bridge quantity.
3. Qualify a second source. The right move for anything you will still be building in three years. NRND is the ideal moment to start because you have time to do it properly rather than under a deadline. Note that pin compatible is not the same as drop-in, particularly for automotive and other qualified products where a change triggers requalification. 4. Plan the redesign. Unavoidable when the function has genuinely moved on and no equivalent exists in the same footprint. Expensive and slow, which is exactly why you want to learn about it at NRND rather than at last time buy.
In practice most teams end up combining options 2 and 3: a bridge buy that funds the time needed to qualify the alternate. Where NRND and post-NRND stock actually comes from
While a part is NRND, it is a normal catalogue item. Once the last time ship date passes, the authorized channel empties and remaining supply sits with independent distributors, excess inventory holders and the aftermarket. That market is where genuine parts and counterfeits mix, and the risk rises sharply for exactly the parts most in demand: obsolete memory, legacy MCUs, discontinued analog.
If you are buying past the authorized window, the documentation is the product. Insist on lot and date code traceability, a certificate of conformance naming the specification, and inspection to a recognised counterfeit avoidance standard. What to do this quarter
- Run the current BOM against manufacturer lifecycle data and list every line that is NRND, Non-Promotion or Mature.
- For each one, record the vendor's own definition of that status, not a normalised label from a tool.
- Sort by annual usage multiplied by remaining product life. That ranking, not the status flag, tells you where to spend attention.
- Subscribe to product change notifications for every manufacturer on the BOM so the discontinuance notice reaches a person, not an unmonitored inbox.
- For the top few lines, decide now between bridge buy, second source or redesign, and put a date on it.
