The Nexperia crisis has left thousands of European production lines exposed. In October 2025 the Dutch government took control of Nexperia, the Nijmegen-based discrete and logic manufacturer owned by China's Wingtech, under the Goods Availability Act. China's commerce ministry responded by restricting exports of Nexperia products packaged at its Dongguan facility, and within weeks German automotive manufacturers were slowing production. What happened, briefly

Nexperia was spun off from NXP's Standard Products division in 2017 and acquired by Wingtech in 2019. It ships tens of billions of units a year, and a large share of its finished parts are packaged in China. That footprint became the fault line: after the Dutch intervention, China restricted exports from the Dongguan site, cutting off finished-goods supply even where wafers were available. Nexperia's China unit has since been qualifying alternative wafer suppliers, a process reported to take around six months, while the legal dispute continues before the Dutch Enterprise Chamber. Honda alone has guided an operating-profit impact of roughly US$960 million for its fiscal year ending March 2026, and the case could run through appeals for years.

The practical consequence for buyers: this is not a normal allocation cycle with a known recovery date. It is a geopolitical standoff, and planning has to assume continued disruption.

Why automotive buyers are hit hardest

Nexperia's strength is exactly what makes the shortage painful. Its catalog is dominated by AEC-Q100 and AEC-Q101 qualified small-signal parts: 74HC and 74HCT automotive logic, BAV99 and BAS16 switching diodes, BC846 and BCX5x transistors, BSS138 MOSFETs, ESD protection. These are cheap, unglamorous components designed into practically every ECU, body control module and sensor interface in a modern vehicle. A euro-cent diode can stop a production line just as effectively as a missing microcontroller, and because these parts sit on qualified automotive BOMs, buyers cannot simply solder in whatever is on the shelf.

Your three options when Nexperia parts are stuck

1. Wait it out. Viable only if you hold buffer stock beyond your exposure window. Given the six-month wafer requalification timeline and an unresolved court case, waiting is a bet most production planners cannot responsibly make.

2. Requalify a second source. The structural fix. Most Nexperia small-signal parts have functional equivalents from other manufacturers, but for automotive use the alternative must be AEC qualified and pass your own PPAP process, which typically takes weeks to months. Pin-compatible is not drop-in: the AEC reality check

For commercial designs, a same-function, same-package part from the table above can often be swapped after a datasheet review. Automotive is different. An AEC-Q101 diode from another manufacturer is qualified to the same standard, but it is not qualified in your product until it passes your PPAP, and parameters that rarely matter in commercial designs, such as switching recovery, capacitance and thermal behaviour, can shift subtly between vendors' processes.
