Samsung ended DDR3 production in the second quarter of 2024 and SK hynix stopped at the end of 2023, leaving Micron plus specialist suppliers Nanya and ISSI as the remaining sources. As of mid-2026, DDR3L lead times have stretched past 39 weeks, prices are climbing rather than falling, and memory makers are steering wafer capacity toward DDR5 and HBM for AI demand. Why DDR3 is disappearing while demand is not
DDR3 launched in 2007 and became the workhorse memory of the 2010s, but the economics that keep a memory node alive have turned against it. Each wafer a fab commits to legacy DDR3 is a wafer not making far more profitable DDR5 or HBM, and with AI systems consuming record volumes of advanced memory, the opportunity cost of producing DDR3 has never been higher. The result is a slow-motion squeeze: no dramatic shut-off, just thinning authorized stock, lengthening lead times and quotes that get worse each quarter. Meanwhile the installed base does not shrink. Industrial controllers, automotive clusters, networking gear and medical equipment designed around DDR3 keep needing spares and production runs, often under 12 to 15 year lifecycle commitments the OEM already made to its own customers.
DDR3 vs DDR3L: the mistake that stops a line
The single most expensive error in DDR3 sourcing is treating DDR3 and DDR3L as interchangeable. They are not. A part qualified on one voltage will not simply run on the other, and buying the wrong one wastes both money and the scarce remaining stock.

Your options, and how to decide
Three routes exist once a DDR3 part enters its last-time-buy window, and the right one depends on how long the product must ship and how much redesign budget exists.
1. Last-time-buy the original part. The default for products with a fixed, forecastable remaining life. Size the buy against production plus spares plus RMA volume across the whole remaining program, not just the next order, and arrange proper dry-pack storage for the BGAs. 2. Qualify a second source. Micron, Nanya and ISSI all build JEDEC-compliant DDR3L, so a protocol-compatible second source often exists, but it must be qualified in your design, not treated as a test-only drop-in. 3. Secure verified stock through the independent channel. When the franchised shelf is empty but the product still ships, the independent market holds inventory bought before the squeeze.
