Chip resistor prices have moved three times in 2026. Yageo and Walsin raised thick film lines from 1 February by up to 20%, TrendForce recorded a further 10-15% average rise on resistors, inductors and ferrite beads from 1 April, and Walsin told distributors of another resistor increase effective 1 June. As of 8 November 2026 we could find no public fourth-quarter resistor notice, and by late September silver, the metal resistor makers worried about most, had fallen to about half its January peak. For most European buyers that argues against a rushed brand switch. On a 180-resistor board at an illustrative EUR 2 per 1,000, a 20% rise adds about 7 euro cents.
How much have chip resistor prices risen in 2026?
Reported chip resistor increases were 10-20% in February and 10-15% on average in April, followed by a June round whose size has not been published. The rounds do not simply add up, because each covers a different supplier or product set. Compound them only where your own quote history shows it.
| Effective | Supplier | Reported scope | Reported size |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Feb 2026 | Yageo | Selected series including RC0402, RC0603, RC0805 and RC1206 | About 10-20% |
| 1 Feb 2026 | Walsin | All resistance values, case sizes 0201 to 1206 | Up to 20% |
| Feb 2026 (reported) | Ta-I, Ever Ohms | Chip resistors, following the two leaders | Not published |
| 1 Apr 2026 | Passive suppliers generally | Resistors, inductors and ferrite beads | 10-15% on average |
| 1 Jun 2026 | Walsin | Resistors and selected capacitors | Not published |
The February figures come from TrendForce's report of 22 January, the April figure from its press release of 28 April, and the June notice from DigiTimes. These are press accounts of supplier letters, so treat the percentages as ranges and not as a price list. One trap: Yageo's broad 1 July increase, reported at around 50% overall, covered capacitors. If a quote on an RC0402 cites "the July increase", ask which notice it means. The MLCC shortage is a separate market with different drivers.
Has the cost pressure behind the increases eased?
Partly: silver fell from a record $121.67 per ounce on 29 January 2026 to about $63 on 24 September, while ruthenium was last confirmed far above its 2025 level. Ruthenium oxide is the resistive element in thick film parts and silver sits in the inner termination, so these two metals carry the argument.
When the first round landed, resistor makers said silver above $100 could trigger a second one. Kitco lists the January record, and Fortune's daily price report gave $63.46 on 24 September, well under that trigger. Ruthenium is the harder case: Reuters, citing Johnson Matthey benchmarks, put it at about $1,750 per ounce on 13 March, against $560 a year earlier. We could not confirm a newer benchmark.
Do not expect metal prices alone to bring quotes back down. Walsin's notices also cited labour, electricity and demand, and TrendForce points to limited capacity growth and AI demand running well beyond the previous automotive-led cycle. Use the silver numbers in one specific way: if a supplier blames silver for a new 2027 increase, ask for the reference price and date behind it.
Does switching resistor brand pay for itself?
Rarely on price alone: under the assumptions below, a board needs to ship more than 33,000 units a year before a second-source approval repays itself within twelve months. Replace our figures with your own, since the formula matters more than the inputs.
Take an illustrative 0402 thick film price of EUR 2.00 per 1,000, not a quote, rising 20% to EUR 2.40. A board with 180 of them costs EUR 0.072 more. At 10,000 boards a year that is EUR 720. Three engineering days at EUR 800 to compare datasheets and update the approved vendor list cost EUR 2,400 before any sample build. Break-even volume per year is the approval cost divided by the extra cost per board: 2,400 / 0.072 = 33,333 boards.
That calculation is also generous, because it assumes the new brand escaped the increase while Yageo, Walsin, Ta-I and Ever Ohms all moved together. In automotive the sum gets worse: for a Tier 2 supplier in Germany, a manufacturer change usually reopens PPAP with the customer, because AEC qualification is tied to the specific part and manufacturer. The better reason to approve an alternative is supply continuity: a second source approved now is available when a reel goes on allocation, and a price hike is a good moment to get the budget for it.
Which chip resistor substitutions are safe?
A swap is safe when construction, tolerance, TCR, power and maximum working voltage all match, and thick film to thick film is the only direction where that is routine. Panasonic's comparison puts thin film at ±0.1 to ±1% tolerance and ±5 to ±25 ppm/°C, and thick film at ±1 to ±5% and ±100 to ±300 ppm/°C.
| Substitution | Works when | Fails when |
|---|---|---|
| Thick film to thick film, other maker | Pull-ups, LED ballast, general bias at 1% or 5%, with TCR and voltage matched | The circuit takes surge or inrush and the new part has no pulse data; the original was anti-sulfur |
| Standard thick film to anti-sulfur (Yageo RC to AF) | The board sees rubber, lubricants, oil-based fuels or industrial air, and TCR and voltage match | A 0.1% tolerance is required; the AF line stops at 0.5% |
| Thick film to thin film | You want lower drift or noise in a signal path | Surge duty, or high voltage in a small case, where thick film is stronger; it also costs more, so it will not solve a price problem |
| Thin film to thick film | The real requirement is 1% and 100 ppm/°C and the thin film was over-specified | ADC dividers, reference networks, gain-setting pairs; silver terminations in sulfur-bearing air |
| Commercial to AEC-Q200 | Any design, if the datasheet values also match | Run in reverse: a commercial part cannot replace an AEC-Q200 part on an automotive drawing |
The gotcha buyers meet first is identification. A chip resistor rarely gives a visual clue to its construction, so thick and thin 0402s look alike on the bench. Work from the ordering code in the BOM, and decode the suffix before you compare prices. Sulfur damage is the second trap, because silver sulfide builds slowly at the termination: resistance creeps up, then the part goes open, often long after the swap that caused it.
Five stocked Yageo and Vishay parts, five different answers
The same price notice calls for a different response on each of these lines, all held by GlobX as of November 2026 and listed with date code 22+. The figures below come from the Yageo RC datasheet and the Vishay PAT datasheet.
- Open to competition: RC0402FR-075K1L (5.1 kOhm, 1%, 345,000 pcs). RC0402 is rated 1/16 W, 50 V maximum, ±100 ppm/°C above 10 ohm. Rated voltage at this value is the square root of 0.0625 x 5,100, or 17.9 V, so power sets the limit and most same-class 1% parts will do.
- Check the voltage line: RC0402FR-07316KL (316 kOhm, 1%, 130,000 pcs). The same formula gives 140 V, so here the 50 V cap governs. An alternate that matches every other line but is rated 25 V fails on this value.
- Stay thin film: RT0402BRD07105KL (105 kOhm, 0.1%, ±25 ppm/°C, 125,000 pcs). Over a 60 K rise it drifts about ±0.15%, against ±0.6% for a ±100 ppm/°C RC part.
- Two separate requirements: PAT1206E1503BST1 (150 kOhm, 0.1%, ±25 ppm/°C, 1,500 pcs in Germany). Vishay's PAT series is AEC-Q200 qualified and separately sulfur resistant per ASTM B809-95.
- Not a commodity resistor: RL0402FR-070R11L (0.11 ohm current sense, 142,000 pcs). The RC0402 TCR table starts at 1 ohm, so a general-purpose thick film part cannot cover this value.
What should European buyers do before 2027 pricing?
Get each notice in writing, buy in full reels, split the BOM by construction, and approve one alternative on your highest-volume lines. Four actions cover it.
- Sort first. Group resistor lines into general thick film, anti-sulfur, thin film and current sense. Only the first group is open to price shopping.
- Quote in reel multiples. RC0402 ships at 10,000 per 7-inch reel, and cut quantities usually lose the price break.
- Do not hunt for a tariff saving. Fixed resistors under heading 8533 carried 0% EU third-country duty as of October 2026, per our HS code guide, so landed-cost differences come from freight and quantity breaks.
- Ask for the real date code. "22+" means 2022 or later. Check the specific lot against your date code limit before a price advantage wins the order.
Send your resistor lines as full ordering codes with annual quantity and acceptable date code through our quote form, and we will come back within 24 hours on which ones are on the shelf.
