What is a BOM?
A Bill of Materials (BOM) is the complete list of components, sub-assemblies, and raw materials required to manufacture a product. For an electronics manufacturer, the BOM lists every resistor, capacitor, IC, connector, and module needed to build one unit — along with part numbers, quantities, manufacturers, and approved alternates.
Managing a BOM is straightforward when components are freely available. It becomes critical when supply chains are disrupted, components reach end-of-life, or prices spike.
What is a BOM Evaluation?
A BOM evaluation is a systematic review of your entire bill of materials by a procurement specialist. For each line item, the evaluator checks:
- Current availability — is the part in stock from authorized or verified sources?
- Lead time — how long will it take to receive the part after ordering?
- Pricing — is the current market price within your budget, and are prices trending up or down?
- End-of-life (EOL) status — is the manufacturer discontinuing the part?
- Approved alternates — are there functionally equivalent parts from other manufacturers that are more readily available or lower cost?
The output is a risk report that lets your procurement and engineering teams prioritize which components need immediate attention.
